Mountain Bike World Cup

If you happen to be in the area during this weekend then you're in luck. We think that this is one of the best sporting events in Scotland, and it takes place right here in the highlands.

The event is part of the Mountain Bike World Cup series, and it's been held at Nevis Range since 2002, and the Fort William event has won numerous awards throughout the years for being one of the best events on the enire World Cup tour, thanks to the amazing Scottish crowd and the extremely hard work by the organisers!

The main event is the downhill, which takes place on our 'orange extreme' downhill track which comes down the mountain beneath the mountain gondola and which is accessed by the riders and their bikes by the gondola. The track is 2.82k in length and the champions ride it in less than 5 minutes!

There'll be more information available neared the time, but in the meantime we recommend you book your holidays and get your accommodation and travel plans in place.

BASP First Aid Course

This 2 day course runs from 9am - 5pm at Nevis Range. It's suitable for Outdoor activity enthusiasts and professionals; acceptable for all National Governing Body Awards and qualifications such as: MLTB, BASI, MBL, TCL, RYA, BCU and other sports. Anyone working in a remote environment or if you prefer a practical course with scenarios to aid learning. The content includes: safety, basic life support (BLS) and CPR in an easy and logical manner. The 2 days are intersperesd with indoor and outdoor practical sessions, including dealing with an unconscious casualty,wounds and bleeding, common medical emergencies, shock, fractures and other trauma often found in the outdoor environment.

Certificate Valid: 3 years. Revalidation by attending course again

Prerequisites: None or revalidate previous course

World Snow Day

NEVIS is planning a day of activities on World Snow Day - 22 January 2012. This is part of world celebrations, the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) is working with snowsports bodies across the globe to raise the profile of all things snow. The festival is all about encouraging children and their families to enjoy, explore and experience snow and introduce newcomers to the opportunities available in their own country, for outdoor activities on snow.

World Snow Wear
We're not quite sure what World Snow Wear actually is ... but if you can find some, wear it on World Snow Day. There's a free mug of our delicious hot chocolate and a slice of cake from the Snowgoose restaurant for the winners of this competition. Judging will take place outside the Snowgoose restaurant at 2pm.

Taster 'Learn to Ski' Sessions
Have you never ever skied before? hen sign up to one of our Taster Sessions including a 1/2 day lift pass, equipment hire (skis, boots & poles) and a 2 hour introductory group skiing lesson. Transceiver Park
The newly built Transceiver Park at Nevis Range will be open all day for practicing search and rescue scenarios with your transceiver, shovels and probes, which can now also be hired on site in Equipment Hire at the base station. Full information and instruction on how to use the Park is available on site. If you need assistance then you can call for a memer of Ski Patrol to provide further information. The Park is free to use, but a lift pass is required to access the hill.

Hmmmm ... winter is almost around the corner ... but we're in the middle of a recession! And of course, we're all trying to be 'green' ... recycle, reuse & reduce! So why not pop along to the ''Ski, snowboard, bikes & kit 'second hand' Sale' this Saturday at the Nevis Centre in the centre of Fort William to grab what you need for the snow ... which surely must be on its way by now.

The ski and board part of the sale is being run by the Lochaber Section of the Scottish Ski Club, and the Wheelers bike club is looking after the bikes part, so there's bound to be some expertise on offer if you need a hand.

So if you've got some unused and unwanted gear, then this is the day for you ... bring any kit you want to sell to the Nevis Centre from 9.30 - 10.30am on the 19th.

Annual Maintenance

Our Annual Maintenance period runs from Monday 14 November until Friday 15 December, these dates are inclusive.

The Pinemarten cafe bar will remain open every day from 10am - 4pm serving a selection of hot and cold snacks, specialty coffees and great cakes and baking.

The gondola and the Snowgoose restaurant & bar at the gondola top station will be completely closed during our annual maintenance period.

High Wire Adventure is now closed for winter. However, we are able to open the couses for pre booked groups of 8 or more.

Mountain Biking is still available in the forest trails. Bike wash, showers and bike maps available on site. The downhill and Nevis Red with gondola uplift are open mid May - mid Sep. Bike Hire will reopen May - Oct 2012.

Motorcycle Event

The 2011 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship will take place at Nevis Range. Spectators are welcome to this event and more information is avaialable on the event website www.ukworldtrial.com.

Entry to Nevis Range is by event ticket only on Sunday 30 July 2011, and tickets will be available on the gate.

Please note that car parking at Nevis Range will be limited on both Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July, and visitors will be directed to the Auction Mart, half way along the access road, where there will be a charge for parking. There will be a shuttle bus from the Auction Mart parking to Nevis Range for those who require this.

The workshop includes making an assessment of the back corries, weather and avalanche risks, preparation and risk assessment, transceivers, shovel and probe, safety on the edge, and rescues. It's designed to introduce the basic concepts and a basic understanding of back country skiing and it is important that individuals consider further and more formal training.

We could not get onto the mountain this morning (Friday) and with the stormy conditions this week and snowwy weather forecast, we have decided to postpone Sundays Nevisrange Highlander. The competitions calendar is busy for the next month but we will see what is available at the end of the season. Scotland's most successful series of ski and snowboard freestyle competitions rocks up at Nevis Range. The mountain gondola will whisk party-goers to 650m up Aonach Mor beside Ben Nevis for the official close of the 2011 Mountain Festival. The Snowgoose restaurant & bar will be open for meals and refreshments from 6.30pm – 8.30pm with a special Festival menu with main dishes priced from £8.

Then its time to dance the night away with a great highland ceilidh band from 8 – 11.30pm. There’s a FREE shuttle bus between Fort William and Nevis Range which departs Fort William (behind Morrisons) at 7pm & 7.45pm and then departs Nevis Range at 11.30pm and midnight.

The Ski Single day will be held on Monday 14 February 2011.

The Ski Single day costing £49 includes equipment hire (skis, boots and poles), a morning 2 hour beginner group lesson, all day ski lift pass, lunch, and a hot chocolate at the end of the day. Those interested, and eligible, should contact Nevis Range Snowsports School on 01397 705825. Numbers will be limited and places allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Singles are invited to take to the slopes of Aonach Mor for a day of falling in the snow, which may eventually lead to them falling in love.

We have introduced a Ski Single day, which will run on St Valentines day on 14. It's aimed at singles who have never skied before, and the full day will include a morning lesson followed by a complimentary Valentine’s day lunch in the Snowgoose restaurant & bar. The afternoon is then left free for couples to continue to play around on the slopes and at the end of the day, a mug of hot chocolate will be waiting for them in the bar.

According to Dr Niall G MacFarlane, Glasgow University “The idea of excitement/fear being related to developing emotional attachments or love has been about for a long time. The classic studies in this area showed that a young woman became twice as attractive to men under conditions that we might now describe as being 'extreme sports' - they were on rope bridges.” He continued, “So you might say that the excitement of skiing - whether that means a novice on a nursery slope or an experienced skier going off piste - has the potential to make us more attractive to possible suitors; while more sedate activities could re-inforce 'that loving feeling' in established relationships.”

Join us on our (almost) annual mountain dash ...

This annual mountain dash from the summit of Aonach Mor starts close to the Ski Patrol hut on the summit and finishes at a location to be confirmed - probably not until the day, but likely to be either Meall Beag or Sgurr Finnisg-aig.

The rules are simple and everyone able to ski or snowboard competently from the Summit down is invited to join in. Ski or snowboard as far as you can get down, exchange your ski gear for your trainers, or not, and start running for the finish.

Start time is approximately 4.30pm, and the exact time will be decided on the day and will be conditions dependent. The event is free to enter and applicants must be in possession of a valid zone A pass. An indication of numbers is helpful so applicants are encouraged to register their interest be contacting Nevis Range in advance on 01397 705825 or email marketing@nevisrange.co.uk. Registration will take place on the day at 2.30pm in the Snowgoose Restaurant where race bibs will be provided. Helmets are advised. The prize giving will be in the Snowgoose bar immediately following the event.

Avalanche Awareness Courses 2011

The Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) is running 2 one-day Avalanche Awareness courses at Nevis Range next winter. Aimed at the general winter hill-goer, the course is non-certificated and will be suitable for anyone wishing to increase their knowledge of snow and avalanches, to learn which areas to avoid and improve their understanding of reports and forecasts. Each course will consist of an indoor introduction to avalanche theory followed by a practical session on the hill. The courses will be delivered by qualified and experienced personnel at a ratio of 1 tutor to 4 participants. Basic winter skills will NOT be covered.

The one-day course costs £35 per person and 2 courses will take place at Nevis Range, one on Saturday 1st January and the other on Sunday 2nd January 2011.

'Uphill' running race at Nevis Range

Join us at Nevis Range for a truly spooky party this Halloween. If you dare, take the gondola, in the pitch blackness, to the mysterious Snowgoose restaurant & bar on the slippery slopes of Aonach Mor. If you arrive safely, sample some of our gruesome dishes for your dinner in the Snowgoose restaurant. Then join us for all the normal Halloween games, including dooking for apples. Wrap up warm to venture outdoors to see the creepy trail of the witch of Leanachan and then warm yourselves around our bonfire. There will also be prizes for the best fancy dress - children and adults, as well as the best carved pumpkin lantern, so come well prepared! Adults are welcome to join in the activities, or just to chill, and enjoy a frightful evening meal and potent drinks from the bar.

Activities for children will take place from 5.30pm – 8pm, with judging of the competitions at 7.30pm. AONACH MOR MOUNTAIN RACE (6.4KM, 780M CLIMB)

Spectators welcome to this international running race incorporating the 2010 UKA British and Irish Mountain Running Senior Home International and the 4th race in the McCain Mountain Running Challenge.

The event will take place on an uphill course at Nevis Range. The course starts near the gondola base station (105m) and the initial 2.5km of the course is on forest tracks at a gentle gradient before the route meets and heads up the main downhill mountain bike track. This track provides good challenging running with a variety of gradients on a rocky, gravelly and occasionally muddy well defined track. Once the gondola top station (650m) is reached there is a short section of Landrover track before the final climb up the open grassy hillside, following the right (west) side of a ski fence, to the finish at 845m above sea level. There are separate races for men and women starting at 1.30pm (women's race) and 2pm (men's race).

The gondola is open as normal and we welcome all our visitors to take some time to watch this international uphill running race.

The 'Respect the Mountain' initiative, returns to Nevis Range on 20 June 2010. Taking place a month later than previous years due to a record breaking Scottish snow season and deep snow bases at the resorts, the event is a chance for mountain users to do their bit by picking up litter left by a season’s worth of visitors.Volunteers are asked to meet at 10am at the bottom of the gondola at Nevis Range and bags are provided for all litter pickers and for everyone who brings back a bag of litter, tea and cakes will be provided. Trial Half Marathon and 5k run

No Fuss Events presents the new Off-Road Half Marathon on May the 16th at Nevisrange Fort William. This off-road event will provide stunning views of the Grey Corries and the Great Glen throughout the 21.1 kilometer course which is suitable for first-time off-road runners, walkers or more experienced ‘mountain goats’.

It will be run on stages of the new Cour Trail which winds its way from Nevis range towards Spean Bridge will include the magical return on the old puggy line. Set yourself a new challenge for 2010 and enter the Trail Half Marathon!

Round Two of the "Halo British Downhill Series" is rocking up to Fort William and the Nevis Range on the 8th and 9th of May 2010.

The first round was a sell out with 320 riders, round two at the Nevis Range has broken all the records and we have over 350 of the U.Ks top flight racers attending! What is the attraction? To race the Worlds hardest downhill track, competing with the best mother nature has to throw at you along with a few extra surprises the Nevis Range course builders have dropped in to spice up your descent down..

With practise all day Saturday, racing on Sunday and free parking and spectating what could be better? Well how about bringing your bike and taking it for a spin.. The red route that will be open all weekend for the first time this year for you to ride, get out, spin those legs, fill the lungs with fresh air, take in the awesome views and stop off half way to watch the BDS racers hit the course flat out!

Official Festival Launch Party at Nevis Range – Thursday 11 February

Let’s get the ceilidh started! The mountain gondola will whisk party-goers to 650m up Aonach Mor beside Ben Nevis for the official opening of the 2010 Mountain Festival.

The Snowgoose restaurant & bar will be open for meals and refreshments from 6.30pm – 8.30pm with a special Festival menu with main dishes priced from £7.50 to £8.50.

Then its time to dance the night away with a great highland ceilidh band from 8 – 11.30pm.

There’s a FREE shuttle bus between Fort William and Nevis Range which departs Fort William (behind Morrisons) at 7pm & 7.45pm and then departs Nevis Range at 11.30pm and midnight.

Advance tickets are priced at £9 adult / £5 child and on the day £10.50 / £6. If you’re a season pass holder or hold a ski pass for the day, then you’ll only pay an extra £4 / £2. To book, please call Nevis Range on 01397 705825. All operations weather permitting.

Borderline Events, in conjunction with Dales Cycles, will be hosting 'KILL THE BILL' on the infamous Fort William World Cup Course. There will be world-class challenges at every stage of the 2.8km course.

Starting at 650 metres up it gives riders a great chance to engage in downhill racing at its best. This course is regularly voted 'best on the world cup circuit' by many racers that travel the world in search of thrills.

Event includes:
- All day Saturday & Sunday morning practice
- 2 timed race runs on Sunday (Timing by SDA)
- Gondola uplift for both days
- Points awarded for licence holders

The snowgoose restaurant is open from 6pm to 9pm serving traditional Scottish food, so you can eat your meal amidst breathtaking highland scenery whilst watching our amazing summer sunsets. Then we've got live scottish music from around 8pm, and then some Scottish dancing. The band will explain the dances, so the whole family can join in the fun! The bar will be open all evening serving local ales and Scottish whisky's, and the last gondola down is around 11pm. The cost for the evening, including gondola and ceilidh, is the normaly price of a gondola ticket .... £9.50 for adults and £5.50 for children.
