Mountain Bike World Cup

If you happen to be in the area during this weekend then you're in luck. We think that this is one of the best sporting events in Scotland, and it takes place right here at Nevis Range in the heart of the highlands. We'd love to see you at this event ... if you can't find the information you are looking for online, then please give us a call on 01397 705825 or email us at info@nevisrange.co.uk.

What is the Mountain Bike World Cup?
The event is part of the Mountain Bike World Cup series and it's been held at Nevis Range since 2002. The Fort William round has won numerous awards over the years for being one of the best events on the entire World Cup tour, thanks to the amazing Scottish crowd and the extremely hard work by the organisers and the volunteers.

4X competition - Saturday
The 4X competition sees riders race down a wide track, 4 at a time, with the first 2 in each race going through to the next round. The course is 200m long and ends in the carpark. It's great to watch from the carpark, and you can easily climb up the spectator track to see more of the action. There's practice for this event from Thursday and the final race kicks of at 6.30pm on Saturday. Event Schedule.

Downhill (DH) competition - Sunday
On Sunday, the main event is the downhill which takes place on our 'orange extreme' downhill track which comes down the mountain under the gondola. Spectators and riders with their bikes access the track by gondola. The course is 2.82k long and the champions ride it in less than 5 minutes! You can take the gondola to the top of the track and walk down the side of the track to see the different sections of the track. We think the best place to be for the last few riders is the finish area in the carpark where there's a giant screen (the largest mobile screen in the world!!) which shows the riders on the upper sections of the course. Practice takes place on Friday and Saturday, and the finals begin on Sunday from 12.30pm.

Food & drink
There's lots of variety for food and drink on site, and both the Pinemarten cafe bar at the base station and the Snowgoose restaurant & bar at the top of the gondola are open - you get a great view from the balcony of the Snowgoose restaurant as the downhill riders set off.

Apres Ski Pre World Snow Day
World Snow Day wouldn't be complete without the new Pinemarten cafe bar staying open late (the night before) to help us celebrate with music and a selection of 'Scottish' fayre and a wee dram! Snow and wind dependent.

Flutes in the Fort

Fort William based ensemble, Flutes in the Fort, was formed at the end in 2007 and consists of a core of around 8 adult players of all ages and stages from the Lochaber area, together with a “junior” section which was set up in late Spring this year. The group also welcomes players from further afield on an occasional basis. Flutes in the Fort play a mixture of classical, traditional and popular styles, many arrangements of well known pieces, but also original music written for flute ensemble.

In 2010 the group was delighted to receive a grant from the Scottish Postcode Trust (postcode lottery) to buy an alto and bass flute and to enable five members to attend a specialist course on Skye to learn how to play “big flutes”. They now have a bigger and more wide ranging repertoire, thanks to the big flutes.

For the concert on 31 August at Nevis Range, the group will be joined by long time member/supporter, Lynne Bulmer, an excellent player who moved to Edinburgh last year, but who makes trip especially to play at this event.

Also taking part as guest artiste will be Helena Rose, from Roy Bridge, a young musician of exceptional talent and well know in the area for both her violin and clarsach playing. On this occasion, she will be enhancing the programme with a selection of atmospheric pieces performed on the clarsach (celtic harp).

Flutes in the Fort welcomes enquiries from potential new members, including other orchestral woodwind players; and the junior section can also cater for recorders.

Flutes in the Fort is a Scottish registered charity, number SC 040544

Mini downhill mountain bike

THE SEARCH FOR SCOTLANDS FASTEST YOUTH DOWNHILL BIKE RIDER IS ON!

Over this coming April and May, Scottish Cycling, the National Governing Body for cycling in Scotland, with the support of Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland will be delivering a Series of Regional Mini Downhill Events to select the countries best Youth Downhill riders. The top riders will then race at the Mini Downhill Final during the Award winning UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, Fort William on the 9th June 2012.

What is a Mini Downhill I hear you ask? Downhill mountain biking is a fast and exciting sport, pitting man and machine against the clock. Each rider has to ride a set course comprising of jumps, drops, roots, rocks, twists and turns. The aim is to complete the course in the fastest time you can.
Mini downhill is just like the real thing but miniature! Shorter courses, smaller bikes (no need for full suspension!) and younger riders but it has all of the passion, excitement and drama of racing! The Mini Downhill Series will provide young downhill riders, aged between 8 and 16 years of age, their first taste of downhill mountain bike racing. The podium places from each event will be invited to compete at the final at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, Fort William.

The afternoon is then left free for couples to continue to play around on the slopes and at the end of the day, a mug of hot chocolate will be waiting for them in the bar.

According to Dr Niall G MacFarlane, Glasgow University “The idea of excitement/fear being related to developing emotional attachments or love has been about for a long time. The classic studies in this area showed that a young woman became twice as attractive to men under conditions that we might now describe as being 'extreme sports' - they were on rope bridges.” He continued, “So you might say that the excitement of skiing - whether that means a novice on a nursery slope or an experienced skier going off piste - has the potential to make us more attractive to possible suitors; while more sedate activities could re-inforce 'that loving feeling' in established relationships.”
