The Action
Downhill
Full
on, mental downhill action
The
Downhill takes place on a modified version of the permanent
Off Beat Downhill Course, a spectacular track that drops 555m
in 2.82km, offering magnificent views of Ben Nevis, the sea
lochs of Loch Linnhe and Loch Eil and the islands of the Inner
Hebrides . It has a reputation as one of the longest and most
demanding courses on the World Cup circuit. The Gondola effortlessly
transports both riders and spectators to 2150ft from where
the gruelling descent begins!!
Top UK riders including Steve Peat, Crawford
Carrick Anderson and Stu Thomson are involved with the design
of new features to make the course even more challenging than
it already is.
2.5
hours of lung-busting x-country hell
The
super fit of the World Cup circuit tackle the specially constructed
Witch's Trail in the Leanachan Forest. A combination
of fast flowing forest road and single track together with
technical single track climbs and descents will challenge
the rider's skill and courage as well as their endurance.
4-X
The
gladiators of the 4-X arena
Fort William launched the 4-X event in 2002
and set the standard for the head to head battle of power,
tactics and total commitment. Four riders launch themselves
down the bumps, jumps and berms - but only two go through
to the next round.
Mountain
Bike World Cup 2006 - Best Downhill & 4-Cross
For
the fifth year running Nevis Range won awards for the Best
Downhill & 4-Cross Mountain Bike World Cups 2006, reflecting
the huge success of this festival of mountain biking in the
Scottish Highlands, watched by more than 18,000 spectators.
The annual awards are based on the votes
of competitors, officials and media who have attended events
on the mountain bike World Cup circuit. It is the third
year running that Fort William has won the award.
Singletrack Event of the Year 2005
The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup at Fort
William has been voted Best UK Cycling Event of 2005 in the
Cycle 2005 Singletrack Reader Awards, also won in 2003. This
is judged on atmosphere, organisation and location, it is
extremely important to all concerned as it is voted for by
the readers themselves.
Scottish Thistle Award for Area
Tourism Initiative
Rare Management, Organisers of the Fort
William World Cup, were recognised by the Scottish Tourism
industry, when they won the 'Area Tourism Initiative' Award
at the prestigious Scottish Thistle Awards.
The Thistle Awards are recognised as
representing the greatest possible achievement in Scotland's
tourism industry, with entries being judged on their ability
to encourage the visitor to spend more, stay longer and return.
The Mountain Bike World Cup was judged to be an extremely successful
event, which brought involvement, ownership and pride to the
area as well as over £750,000 to the local economy.
With over 18,000 spectators at the world
cup in 2006, this is widely regarded as an outstanding event
that is not to be missed, there is lots to see and do as well
as the competition action itself.

The focal points for the events, the atmosphere
and the side events are The World Cup Village itself, which
occupies most of the Nevis Range car park and the finish area.
As well as the technical team area there
are Trade stands offering all the latest mountain bike goodies,
demonstrations, competitions, food and drink, support competitions
and some very unusual entertainment!!
Most
of the DH course is accessible although the middle section
has more restrictions, so always follow the marked routes.
The exciting Off Beat Wall near the finish is now accessible
by a new path from the finish.
The Witch's trail course has been specifically
designed for the new Cross Country event. Spectator
management, particularly on the high-speed sections will be
very important so please respect all signs, directions and
instructions from marshals.
The 4-X course is very open but will be
surrounded by crowds for the competition. There are some new
spectator platforms, a new footpath to the start and a more
open finish area to increase viewing options.
