First Timers' Guide

Skiing in Scotland is much the same as skiing anywhere else in the world - you must come prepared to get cold and wet! For the aspiring skier or snowboarder there are some important points to consider:

  • How to stay warm and dry(ish)
  • What equipment you need and where to get it
  • Where to get instruction in your chosen sport
  • Where the best runs for beginners are

What to wear

The most important thing to consider is keeping warm enough and staying relatively dry. Ideally you need breathable waterproof clothing - and lots of layers! Remember it is easier to remove layers once on the slopes and your level of exertion increases than to add additional layers if the temperature drops!!

The clothing that you choose should allow freedom of movement and if possible provide warmth even when wet. As a general guideline underclothes try to avoid cotton and create several layers e.g Vest/thermal, long sleeved T Shirt, wool or fleece top. For the bottoms, leggings or tracksuit are best and, at all costs, avoid jeans or trousers with zips or buttons at the ankle. Another useful hint to keep you warm, is to wear a pair of long medium thickness woollen socks.

Skiers on the gentle summit runsOuter clothing needs to be wind and waterproof and preferably with a collar that will zip up to protect the neck and chin, with cuffs or fastenings at the wrist. A hat or helmet that covers the forehead and ears, as well as the main part of the head will also help to keep you warm.

The lack of gloves can ruin any great skiing trip, no matter what you do, your hands ARE going to get wet when you ski especially if you are new to the sport. You need to make sure that your gloves are waterproof and well insulated and that there is an overlap with the jacket at the wrists. Goggles are not absolutely necessary but can make or break a day when conditions are not ideal.

Nevis Range do hire adult ski clothing, but we do not hire other essentials such as hats, gloves or goggles. However if you do not have your own gear the shop at the top station sells a range of these items.

Equipment

Gentle beginner slopes at Nevis RangeIf you do require to hire equipment , the hire workshop located at the base station or hire shops located at both Nevisport and Ellis-Brighams in town will ensure all your needs are catered for. Our experienced technicians will select suitable equipment for you, dependant on your height, weight and shoe size.

Instruction

If it's your first time on the slopes we highly recommend that you undertake some form of tuition, especially for those who don't want to find out where the local A&E is!! Being entirely un-biased, we would also personally recommend the Nevis Range Ski and Snowboard Schoo l for all your tuition needs!! You will find packages and lessons that cater for the first timers every need.

Beginners' Area

Beginner slopesIf you check out the Nevis Range piste map you will see that approximately 55% of our runs are blue and green, so there are ample areas perfect for the first timer!! The majority of these runs are located a stones throw from the top station, and with the exception of the runs accessed by the Summit button and the Quad chair which means you only need to purchase a Zone B ticket!!

A word of warning though - on days when full cover is not available beware of heading straight up the mountain to the blue runs on the summit, as the red runs down the Goose can sometimes test even the most experienced skier's nerve. If you are having instruction it is a good idea to ask your instructor what runs would be suitable for your level of ability. There is a dry slope located at the bottom of the alpha tow, which is used when the snow cover on the lower part of the mountain is not sufficient for skiing.

Please ensure that you READ THE SKI REPORT, located on the information boards at the bottom station and on the T.V screens as you enter the gondola hall, to ensure you have an idea of the conditions before you head onto the slopes.
